Will in the Basement Original Ink on Paper 5"x 7" 2022

$200.00

Original Pen and Ink Sketch on Paper 5'“x 7” 2022.
Framed by the Artist in a White Wooden 8”x 10” Frame.

Note from the artist: “I frame every piece deliberately in white as an homage to Paul Gauguin, though none of his works remain in their original frames. Collectors prefered the opulent gold which was in vogue during Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. This practice of framing in white is meant to truly isolate the work from ephemeral trends and provide a sense of timelessness and spirituality. In my thinking, it leaves nothing to hide behind. Color relationships have to be perfect, line arrangements faultless. I like that it punishes the smallest mistakes.”

This piece is among my first in this sparse, gesture driven style. Negative space and distorted perspectives are accentuated by very distinct hatching. This piece depicts my older brother, Will, in our parent’s basement in Cullowhee, NC. This is a personal favorite of mine.
