James mats and frames all of his work deliberately in white as an homage to Paul Gauguin, though none of his works remain in their original white on white frames. Collectors prefered the opulent gold which was in vogue at the time. This practice of framing in white is meant to truly isolate the piece and provide a sense of timelessness and spirituality where every emphasis on the work itself.
